In 2016, the world was introduced to Ben Affleck as the next Batman. He starred in Batman vs. Superman, a film with immense potential that, for the most part, flopped. While that wasn’t entirely Affleck’s fault, it doesn’t exactly set him up for success as the next actor to portray the caped crusader known as Batman. However, the film did establish a good backstory for Batman, from the burning down of Wayne Manor to the scene where Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed. However, it remains to be seen if a solo Batman movie can be a success.
Affleck was also featured in a few cameos in the recent Suicide Squad movie. That movie was much more successful, and Affleck did well in the few chances he got to portray Batman in it. However, thanks more to the success of the recent Dark Knight trilogy than to Affleck’s skills as an actor, there are reasons to believe that attempting to remake a Batman movie series may prove practically impossible.
Why Affleck’s Batman Will Let Us Down
The Dark Knight Trilogy was Too Good
From Christopher Nolan’s directing to the soundtracks of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, which were composed by James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer, respectfully, the recent and most modern Batman series was simply too good to try and recreate so soon. Sure, DC and the film studios that are making the next Batman movies may be doing their own spin on the character of Batman, but most fans and moviegoers will see them as the same.
The Villains in the Recent Series Were Monumental
As if Liam Neeson didn’t do a good enough job in Batman Begins,Heath Ledger had to go out and give one of the most epic performances of all time in The Dark Knight, which was released in 2008. That particular film was also iconic because it was the last movie Heath Ledger would ever make, since he died while it was being filmed. After that, Tom Hardy delivered a fantastic performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. All of these characters are among some of the best antagonist portrayals we have seen in recent years, especially when it comes to a superhero movie.
It’s Just Too Soon
At the end of the day, it’s just too soon to try and make Batman again. That isn’t going to stop the producers from putting together another movie, as long as it makes them some money along the way. But in my personal opinion, it would’ve been more respectful to Christian Bale and all he devoted to making The Dark Knight trilogy. The same goes for Heath Ledger, who died tragically during the filming of The Dark Knight.
They’ll Still Be Worth Watching
There are a lot of people who don’t care that they are already making another Batman movie. Others, like myself, are going to see the films but would still have rather them waited longer to make more. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t go see the next Batman movie that Ben Affleck is in. Although Batman vs. Superman wasn’t my favorite superhero film, I still enjoyed it, and I expect to enjoy the next Batman film.
Maybe it’s best to avoid comparisons. Christian Bale and Ben Affleck are both great actors, and maybe in ten years we’ll all look back and say that they both did a great job in their portrayal of Batman. Batman is one of the most popular superheroes, and the next Batman film will have a lot of people go see it, regardless of who stars in it.
